Fabric: smooth and tight wins
Screen printing lays ink on top of the fabric, so a smooth, tightly-knit surface produces the crispest results:
- Ring-spun cotton is a top choice — its tighter, smoother fibers give clean, sharp prints and a soft hand.
- Standard cotton prints well and is budget-friendly.
- Cotton-rich blends print nicely and offer a softer, lighter feel.
- 100% polyester can be printed but needs the right inks to prevent dye migration (color bleeding from the fabric into the ink); it's more specialized.
Textured or high-pile fabrics (like fleece surfaces) are harder to print sharply because the fibers poke through the ink.
Weight: enough body to hold the print
Midweight and heavier fabrics tend to hold prints well and resist show-through. Very light fabrics can print fine for a soft, fashion feel but may show the print through the back on bold designs.
Color: lighter is simpler (and often cheaper)
Printing on light garments is straightforward. Dark garments often need a white underbase layer so colors show true, which can add cost and a slightly heavier ink feel. If budget and simplicity matter, a light garment with a one- or two-color design is ideal.
